A lava dome in the middle of the ocean
The eruptions and other lava flows are so impressive that platforms have been installed for the public to admire this impressive show. Because during the first year of the eruption of the volcano, in 1969, a phenomenon occurred.
A giant dome of lava took shape above the volcano. It was 20 meters high. This natural phenomenon was immortalized in a photo by J.B. Judd the same year. 12 lava fountain events occurred during this first year of eruption. The lava was so large that it spilled into the ocean, spreading up to 12 kilometers from the eruption.
This perfect dome of lava lasted three days, from October 10 to 13, 1969, reaching 76 meters high. We can even see lava ripples on the ocean in the foreground of the photo. This lava dome is produced like a geyser thanks to the ascending spray of lava.
